[snip] Compliance with DoD 5015 is only mandated if you are working on
"military" related records... [snip]
Many other United States federal organizations also require DoD
5015.2-STD compliance, Department of Energy for one. We are a major
subcontractor and as such are required to comply with this standard by
2009. I do agree that for most non-government entities, it provides a
nice framework but doesn't require point-by-point compliance. Doug
Allen, who often participates on this listserv gave a great presentation
to the Las Vegas ARMA chapter on just this topic a few years back.
[snip] Most commercial vendors do however go through the 5015.2 or the
5015.4 certification to ensure that their software complies with the
standard and to get a stamp of approval.[snip]
Keep in mind that just because software has passed the compliance
testing, if you are required to comply with DoD 5015.2-STD, you need to
IMPLEMENT the software to those specifications. There can be quite a
bit of configuration to achieve this goal. An analogy is that your car
is required to have a seatbelt but you can certainly get in the car and
drive around without it. Just because the software has a stamp on it,
doesn't mean there won't be work to run it in a compliant fashion.
