This isn't my story, but a friend's, who isn't a records manager, and let me
begin by saying this happened about THREE MONTHS AGO:
My friend works for a company that does education statistics. The company
contacted a school district in the Southeastern US to ask if the district
wanted to participate in whatever the program is for this upcoming school
year (the school gets financial incentives to participate, so usually
schools want to do this). The school responded that the district wouldn't
have time, what with the whole "integration thing."

Until this current, upcoming school year, the school has been segregated,
and has bussed students across town to different schools. At the end of the
2007-2008 school year, someone went to move a filing cabinet, discovered the
bottom drawer was locked, and pried it open with a crowbar. Apparently, a
letter from the (state? federal?) government requiring the school district
to integrate, dated sometime in the late 1950s, was opened, put in the back
of the filing cabinet, locked in the drawer, and ignored. And nobody ever
said a word about the fact that the schools were not integrated.

When the letter was discovered (in April 2008), the district realized it had
to comply with the order to integrate the schools.
