Hi Gary,

There are many choices out there that are either designed specifically for the legal vertical, or work well within it. A big factor for your friend is what size firm they are working in, and what kind of budget they have to work with.

Just in general, a great place to look first is to the company who provides their time and billing software. Most of the products out there offer some records management functionality, however the quality varies dramatically (in terms of what RMs would consider acceptable). Elite, CMS/Aderant, and others all have product pieces that will fit.

Another place to look is to their DM provider, if they have one. Many of those also have RM modules that fit nicely onto the DM product (Interwoven and Hummingbird - or whatever they call themselves now - are both solid options).

CA/MDY's FileSurf is also an option to consider, and has been a leader in the legal vertical for years (and continues to fare well since CA bought them a few years ago).

If they are a small office, there is a product called InMagic that is traditionally used as law library software, but has been used in a RM capacity successfully. InMagic doesn't have all of the "bells and whistles" that most of the other products have, but it is functional.

I hope that helps. If I can help further, please feel free to forward my contact info to your friend and have them contact me directly.

Best,
Julie
