Hi Margie,

I was the Program Chair for the San Antonio conference and I should share with you the extent of preparations that make this conference such a great bargain.

The program is arrived at by a democratic review of sessions proposed.  Every session is reviewed carefully by a cadre of RIM professionals and the hardworking ARMA International HQ staff.  A final calendar of sessions is assembled in advance that the RIM professionals believe will help their colleagues face the current "hot topics" of the year.  Takeaways that are immediately useful to you back at your desk have been emphasized by the selection committee as long as I served on it; I doubt that's changed.

The vendor floor is a great opportunity to ask questions and meet the software vendors--I myself have always participated in the conference curriculum, so I had meager opportunities to visit the floor until last year.  This was invaluable.  Due to the Hurricane Ike interruption, I will cut short my Las Vegas conference plans this year, but I will be there overnight to visit the floor again this year if I have to sleep on a friend's couch.

My favorite part of the conference is the opportunity to network with peers.  There are a ton of interesting records stories out there and my favorite part of the conference is chatting up colleagues (blatantly!) in search of The Next Big Thing.

If I were you, I'd explain to your employer that you will enjoy informative sessions that will answer immediately the burning questions waiting for you back at your desk; you will receive useful tools that will also help you there in your environment that you can then customize to your needs; you will be able to see most (if not all) of the vendors you need to talk to; and you will be able to compare notes and lessons learned with colleagues for a truly inexpensive price.

Just a few thoughts from my end.
