Anne might also want to consider whether its worth the cost and the
effort to cram the legacy data back into SAP. Perhaps another less
expensive solution would be to export data from the legacy systems to a
sustainable non-propietary format (Delimited ASCI Text, maybe PDF
although it is proprietary it is relatively open, XML)and maintain as
separately backed up files with a simple search engine. It might be much
less expensive to develop another application that doesn't have all the
bells and whistles SAP has, but still makes the data accessible for the
probably infrequent uses.

Not pretty but probably much cheaper in the long run. You may also be
able to build in more accurate purge control, although if its truly an
"archive" it shouldn't be purged at all! ;-)
