Deb Rifenbark asked:

"Looking for ideas that I might implement as to how Records Management
is structured within other law firms. Wanting to find ways to gain team
balance in management. I currently have both centralized and
de-centralized records programs in 8 offices which include NBI /
Conflicts, Audits, creation through disposition of records - no matter
the format."

At our firm the Records organization consists of NBI, conflicts, and
disposition. We have 11 offices (all but one in the US). All NBI are
centralized to the home office (in Los Angeles). Our conflicts staff
runs the conflict reports but does not perform any resolution; this is
done centrally by our general counsel's office. The Records
organization is part of IT. There are active physical records
operations (file centers) at each office, but they are not part of
Records, and report through the local office manager. We're currently
without a retention schedule, although we have implemented a standard
retention for client matter physical files of 10 years after closure
(with some exceptions, of course). We've recently purchased a new RIM
software application (Interwoven Records Manager - IRM) to replace our
existing one (Accutrac), but haven't yet installed it. Since we
currently use Interwoven as our DMS, our hope is that we can use IRM to
apply retention to the electronic documents stored in the DMS.

I hope this is of some help.
