Janie,

In the past, when visiting both domestic and international commercial records storage businesses we were asked to leave cell phones at the front desk before touring these facilities. Surprisingly enough, when I took a tour of the warehouse at a local facility of an "industry leader" a few weeks ago, that particular request was not made of me--and yes, I did have my cell phone with me in my pocket during the whole visit (and no, I didn't use it).

As a long-time listserv member I don't remember any discussions on this particular issue, but you do raise some very interesting talking points.

When I worked at Dept. of Homeland Security a couple of years ago, I had to leave my cell phone either in a locked box or with the front desk whenever I entered certain departments even though I had top secret security clearance. I was always asked if I had a cell phone or camera, whether it was visible or not. They'd activate a blue light in the ceiling that flashed (anybody remember the days of disco?) whenever anyone outside of their department was either on the floor or in that office. Tight security? No doubt given that environment, but it's got me to thinking about some of your points regarding security at the corporate level--for records. Maybe all of that is overkill for businesses... at least until you get burned bad enough.

Good post.

Thanks.
Earl
