A limited number of places are still available on the following short
part-time distance learning courses offered by the Centre for Archive
and Information Studies at the University of Dundee (Scotland).  The
courses form part of the University's Masters programmes but can be
taken singly for continuing professional development. All courses are
delivered fully online. Courses start in January and last 9 or 15 weeks.

** Electronic Records Management (15 weeks) **
** Strategic Management for Information Professionals (15 weeks) **
** Compliance with Information Legislation: Principles and Practice (15
weeks) **
** Comparative Concepts in Information Rights: Part 1 (9 weeks) **
** Disaster Management for Information Professionals (9 weeks) **
** Business Archives and Records (15 weeks) **
** Ethics and International Perspectives (9 weeks) **

Course information:

** Electronic Records Management (15 weeks) **
Examines the key issues facing record keepers when dealing with
electronic records and information including:
- Understanding the challenges associated with electronic information
- Devising strategies to cope with those challenges within your
organisation
- Developing solutions within organisations that do not rely on the
procurement of EDRM systems

** Strategic Management for Information Professionals (15 weeks) **
Considers the key strategic management challenges faced by information
professionals including:
- Resource management including financial and HR issues
- Management techniques and strategies relevant to the work of
information professionals
- Using management skills to develop service provision

** Compliance with Information Legislation: Principles and Practice (15
weeks) **
Examines the theory and practice associated with the principal elements
of UK information legislation including:
- The Data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Acts and the
Environmental Information Regulations
- Understanding the impact of this legislation on organisations and
developing strategies to cope with that impact
- Analysing and understanding the requirements of information
legislation and how the law has developed and may evolve in future

** Comparative Concepts in Information Rights: Part 1 (9 weeks) **
Looks at the conceptual basis for information rights legislation to
deepen understanding drawing on international examples and precedents:
- An introduction to information legislation in different jurisdictions
including the UK, Scotland, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand
- The ‘public interest’ as a concept using relevant case studies
- Harm, prejudice and substantial prejudice

** Disaster Management for Information Professionals (9 weeks) ** (can
also be combined with a Preservation module to last 15 weeks - please
contact us for further details)
Designed to cover all aspects of preparing for and responding to
potential hazards and disasters, with many practical suggestions for:
- Risk management: gathering information, identifying hazards, case
histories and role in the organisation
- Preparedness: priorities, planning responses to disasters, training
and simulation
- Response and recovery: reacting to damage, service continuity, long
term recovery

** Business Archives and Records (15 weeks) **
Looks at the nature of business records and archives the issues
concerned with their management and use.
- What business archives are, where they are held and the role of the
business archivist
- The development of businesses, the records they produce and their
potential as archives
- Records management, appraisal and access to business collections
- International and current issues

** Ethics and 
International Perspectives (9 weeks) **
Looks at the broader - Accountability, ethics, archives and society
- Legislation (national and international) and its impact
- External opportunities, fundraising, the media, cross-domain working
