* Metadata Standards and Information Taxonomies * (15 weeks)

This course examines the main metadata concepts and standards, the use of metadata for the management and retrieval of records and archive collections, and the use of metadata in identity, discovery and resource description. The course also considers the main types of taxonomy, how classification systems apply to records and archival collections, hierarchical and faceted classification systems, the importance of controlled vocabularies, and ontologies and folksonomies.


* Wider Legal Frameworks * (9 weeks)

This course surveys the legal structures that impact upon the work of information professionals over and above the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts and the Environmental Information Regulations  including:

Access to Health Records Act 1990
Re-Use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005
Human rights and the right to a private life
Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000
Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practices) (Interception of Communications) Regulations 2000
Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003
Official Secrets Act 1989
Prescription and Limitation Acts
