In addition to Peter's earlier comment about "document retention" not being quite the appropriate term of art, the requestor below also needs to know that there is no such thing as a California-specific "best practices" records retention program. Even though it's not stated, I'm assuming that what the requestor wants is a RIM program for law firms, not a RIM program for general business in California, and, if this is so, there are only a couple of resources available that will provide the basics, both of which are available through both the ARMA and ALA Bookstores. I've attached info on these two books below. Because the requestor is a law firm administrator, not a records manager, the best bet for additional guidance is to go straight to ALA's Legal Management Resource Center. The folks at ALA have collected a ton of info on records management that is available to members. I'm a member of both ARMA and ALA, so feel free to follow up with me off list if it would be helpful.

This book addresses the issues arising from the need to manage records and information in a law office and use records management as a tool for: improving risk management, managing e-mail as part of a client file, implementing records retention schedules, managing records during investigations and audits, serving the techno-centric and techno-phobic attorney, and using records management as a pipeline to knowledge management. This book is suitable for both the large and small office. Author: George Cunningham and John Montaņa .

I am in the process of suggesting a best practices for our firm's
California Document Retention Requirements. I did not see anything specific
to CA on the website and was hoping to find a template of best practices to
start with. Would you be able to point me in the right direction? Any
help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I am starting from
scratch and learning as I go.
