A few years ago there was a company called Thoroughbred Technologies
that offered a RFID tag that could track media in and out of a vault.
I am looking for a system that will set off an alarm if a piece of
media leaves a vault without proper authorization.
For example, Sensormatic makes an antenna that is used on the door of
many stores and if you walk out with a product without paying for it
and the tag being swiped, the alarm goes off. But that is a one time
deal.
I want a system that can be interfaced with the software so that the
system says, turn off the alarm, this is an authorized removal. Then
when the media is sent back to the vault, it is turned on and cannot
leave again until authorized.
In an ideal world, it would broadcast its ID number so that it
appeared on the video tape like the time and date do on video.
1) Has anyone used this for their media or documents?
2) Would anyone recommend a vendor they have heard of or worked with?
You would be surprised if I told you the application but as always
they make me sign a non-disclosure. It kills me! The coolest places I
go they make me sign these things and then it is as if I never went.
My life appears duller than Gomer Pyle's on Mayberry on the outside.
No wonder my kids all went into science instead of vaulting. "Hey
Dad! What did you do today?" Me: "Nothing!"
Kids: "You sure seem excited!" Me: "I did nothing!"
Plus clients taunt you. One IT guy said "We can even............." At
which I put my fingers in my ears and hummed real loud. Hey you can't
trust me with stuff like that. Shoot I would crack faster than a
walnut in interrogation. "Alright Hugh, I am going to offer you large
cone at Baskin Robbins."
Me: "Okay, Okay, they can time travel now."
So you can see why I need to know where to locate this system for
tracking media into and out of the vault. But mainly out. Its not my
problem if they don't put it in the vault but it is a huge problem if
it walks out of the vault without authorization.
