My Canadian mother learned this from my Southern grandmother:

3 tablespoons melted butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
3 large eggs (Beat them First)
2 cups pecan halves
1/4th cup good bourbon (the original recipe called for 1/8th)
1 9-inch unbaked deep-dish pie shell

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Mix the sugar and melted butter. Add
corn syrup, beaten eggs, pecans, and bourbon, and mix until combined. Pour
into pie shell (place pie pan on a cookie sheet - it will bubble over).
Bake for 10 minutes. Lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees F, and
continue to bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until pie sets. Cool on
a wire rack and then place in a refrigerator until chilled.
