The NARA Records Management training courses listed below are being offered in Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI, and Chicago, IL in the first quarter of FY 2010.
Basic Records Operations
This course describes what to file, how to file it, and how to remove files no longer needed for current business. It covers the variety of activities involved in the maintenance and use, as well as the disposition, of Federal records. It presents practical how-to's in handling records of various types.
Outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:·   Define Federal records and distinguish them from nonrecord materials and personal papers ·   Reduce unnecessary filing ·   Know basic files management principles to administer office records ·   Inventory records ·   Apply records disposition schedules ·   Transfer non-current records to a records centers  
Who should attend?
The target audience for this course is records liaisons, secretaries, files custodians, and others who maintain records as part of their jobs. It could be an introduction to records handling or a refresher course. This course is designed to provide the skills and knowledge needed to manage electronic records throughout the records lifecycle, and to take steps required to transition from a paper to an electronic records environment.Outcomes:On completion of the Electronic Records Management course, participants will be able to:Define key terms related to electronic records management Describe the advantages and limitations of electronic records Identify laws, regulations, and legal policies and practices that impact electronic recordkeeping requirements in a Federal agency Recognize the necessity of involving Information Technology (IT) professionals in records management Identify recordkeeping requirements for electronic records Describe the characteristics of electronic records to consider when determining scheduling and disposition instructions Develop policies and procedures for managing e-records Build recordkeeping functionality into electronic systems 
Who Should Attend?
The course is designed for anyone who has basic records management experience, but is less familiar with electronic recordkeeping; and is responsible for developing or updating agency records schedules, or whose work involves developing records retention requirements for electronic records and information systems.
