one of the top research universities in North America, is ALA-accredited and
offers PhD and Masters degrees in library and information studies, archival
studies, and children's literature. SLAIS is home to a number of unique
research and curriculum initiatives and has successfully attracted
significant funding for multidisciplinary and international research
projects. For more information, visit www.slais.ubc.ca
<http://www.slais.ubc.ca/> . The successful candidate should have a
doctorate in a relevant field, demonstrated administrative ability and
experience, a strong record of scholarship, teaching and service, excellent
communication skills, vision and creativity as a leader, proficiency in
fostering collegiality, and the capacity to create productive partnerships
across disciplinary and organizational boundaries. The Director is
responsible for the academic and administrative leadership of the School.
This includes administration of budgets, personnel and curriculum; the
promotion of high quality research; representing the School with respect to
academic, professional and broader community groups and fostering
relationships with them. Participation in teaching and scholarship is
commensurate with overall administrative responsibilities.

We encourage all who are qualified to apply; however, Canadians and
permanent residents of Canada will be given priority. Candidates from this
group are encouraged to self-identify. UBC hires on the basis of merit and
is committed to employment equity. All qualified persons are encouraged to
apply. UBC is strongly committed to diversity within its community and
especially welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women,
Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual
orientation or gender identity, and others who may contribute to the further
diversification of ideas. The position is subject to final budgetary
approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Applications should include a letter of application, CV, evidence of
teaching effectiveness, and the names and contact information of four
referees. Applications and requests for information should be addressed to:
Professor Dominic McIver Lopes, Office of the Dean, Faculty of Arts, 1866
Main Mall, Buchanan C105C, Vancouver, BC, Canada V6T 1Z1. Review of
applications will begin on December 1, 2009 and will continue until the
