"I'm very interested in this thread because we are preparing a proposal to submit to the powers that be to develop centralized storage for inactive records (we will discuss both insourcing and outsourcing) - we have some warehouse space, but I'm leaning towards outsourcing because the cost of up fitting the warehouse, having staff to manage the warehouse (our RM office is a total of two and we are overworked without managing boxes) would be greater than the cost of sending the records to the vendor - this is based upon my initial review of the situation. From the responses I've seen a trend towards insourcing - and am wondering am I looking at this the wrong way - any thoughts, advice??"

Caroline:

A couple of questions I would ask are, is the warehouse space already paid for or is it an incremental cost? In other words, does your company already own the warehouse space? Also, what volume of records do you have and is there a high level of activity?

For my situation as I previously posted, we had a large amount of boxes, but the activity was minimal. As such, the records department I managed back then, the two of us, could handle it without any additional labor.

Thanks, Steve
