Subject: Re: Retail Industry Focus

Brian,

There used to be an ISG via ARMA which was a little more crowded than
just retail and it was known as the Consumer Services ISG. I attended
that when I worked for a Commercial Real Estate company, but I believe
the ISGs were not continued at some point or at least the annual
meetings at conference weren't continued. The Consumer Services group
meeting was fairly small, maybe 20 people the year I attended.

Anyway, I work for a retail corporation now and there are unique
concerns and somewhat unique records situations in retail. Of some
increasing issue is protection of personally identifiable information.
Also, retail concerns may have a significant amount of transaction
information daily which brings with it challenges. Mainframes are used
more often for the transactional data and not just the financial data.
Also there's usually a higher turnover rate with retail employees so
there are challenges with good systems for HR data and record types.
Litigation risks vary with the type of retail. Generally retail is
considered far more lightly regulated than say Financial Services or
Healthcare. For retailers who initiate national contracts for shred
bins at their stores, they're faced with a maturing industry which is
only now beginning to improve with relation to validating services and
billing from what can be proved to be complete rather than from their
schedule without !
validation. My own feeling is as much possible, setting retention
periods related to processes, is most helpful to match up the retention
for end paper records and related system data which often includes
unique records itself.

Anyway, there's a little bit. A few times two other retail concerns in
my area have met with vendors to give them a better feel for the
distinct needs of retail, but we haven't done a regular industry focus
group.

Feel free to e-mail me off this list at [log in to unmask] and we can
talk about challenges and possibly a way to start a focus group to
whatever degree there is interest.

Tom

Subject: Retail Industry Focus

Hello all,

I am new to the Retail Industry and I was wondering if there are any
professional organizations, etc. that have records management regularly
on their agenda (i.e. American Bankers Association for has a dedicated
effort towards records management in the banking industry). I know
about RILA, but haven't been able to find any records management focus.
Thanks.
