Martin, let me throw out these provocative statements:

1. The likelihood of survival of electronic (not merely digital) records
is in inverse proportion to the span of time over which they are
required to be preserved. The longer the span of time, the less likely
the preservation will be successful.

2. The fundamental issue in the preservation of electronic records is
not technology, it's the ability of the people and institutions charged
with the task to successfully carry it out over the very long term
(centuries and, perhaps, millennia).
