Hi......

I had some questions posed to me about the exam and I responded. Hopefully
they will help others who are writing Part 6 shortly.

Approx how many pages should one write for the 60 Points (or how many
approx words ?) or how many paragraphs or lines per answer ?
Use 2 1/2 hours for the 60 pointer. As this is done on line there are
boxes which open for each component. You never see your whole answer at
one time. I would suggest about 3 typewritten pages for this part.
Scorers are looking for certain points to made and only allow x number of
points for each answer. So you should spend as much time to answer the
question as needed. If you build an outline of what needs to be said and
then supporting documentation filled in that should do it.
- Approx how many pages should one write for the 40 Points (or
how many approx words ?) or how many paragraphs or lines per answer ?
ARMA suggest 90 minutes for this one. You may be able to use some of the
thoughts from the 60 pointer in this area. Remember two separate people
are marking these. You won't be able to copy and paste from one study to
the other as once you close the 60 pointer, it is gone. Suggest about 1
1/2 to 2 pages. Remember you only have 4 hours to write this.
- Should one write a lot of detail in each area or make it more
high level and more generalized ?
You're writing at a high level. If you use acronyms, you will need to
identify them the first time you use them. Write as if you were a
consultant to senior management. Some of the studies tell you who you are
writing the report to....make sure you address this throughout the report.

- Should one repeat one?s understanding of the question in the
first 2-3 paragraphs of the answer or go straight to the answer ?
Yes. You will also need to state certain points....such as "Many
organizations e-records triples every three years." By doing this, you
are reinforcing your position on a certain subject. It also shows the
marker that you have facts that applies to all situations. Remember to
also write a summary at the end of the study re-emphasizing the main
points you have made. Markers like it when you put headings for different
sections. It also makes it easier for them to mark.
- Would bullet points be OK as an answer format (assuming that
one writes a cover paragraph) ?
Yes and no. This is an area where there seems to be some
misunderstanding. They want you to write in paragraph style and yet say
that bullet points can be used. I would suggest that if you use bullet
points, you add significant comment afterwards. Be careful with your
spelling and your grammar...you loose marks if you are sloppy in these
areas and there is no spell check. If you have assumptions, then mention
that you aremaking them. Use your assumptions to make your plan easier.
For instance, an assumption could be that there may already be a records
manager in place. That way you can avoid things like wages, requirements,
responsibilities, etc for a records manager and concentrate more on RIM
content. However, follow what the study says. It may tell you that a RM
has not been hired or no RIM dept. is in existence.

Follow the question and continually revert back to what they are asking.
I've heard it said that many people do not answer the question. When
finished a question, continually ask yourself if the answer is complete.

Good luck with this and if you have further questions, e-mail me or call
me at 416 661-6600 x 5272.
