I used to work for a very large aerospace company that had been in
existence since the first quarter of the 20th century. It was large
enough that it maintained a large historical archive, and its
collections were (and I assume still are) frequently visited/referenced
by a variety of researchers from around the globe. The corporation's
retention schedule included the disposition action, "Review by company
archives". This action would only kick in at the end of the retention
period (i.e., when the record was no longer required to serve an
operational business purpose). The Records organization worked closely
with the archivist to identify those records series that had the
potential for historical value. When a batch of such records had
completed their retention period, a report would be generated and sent
to the archivist for review. The archivist would then either release
the records for final destruction or take custody for the archives.
Once the archivist had taken custody, they were no longer in the Records
organization's jurisdiction.
