Words cannot sufficiently express how great a loss this is, not only
for the profession, but for everyone who has had the great fortune to
have know Al Andolsen as a person.
I first met "Mr. Andolsen" in the late 1970s, long before I felt
comfortable with addressing him as "Al", and similar to Peter, never
missed the opportunity to attend one of his sessions at conference.
No matter how familiar the topic there was always a fresh perspective
or some insights added to the mix based on his vast experience and
exposure to a wide range of organizations. Al was also one of the
most ethical people I ever came across, in this or any other walk of
life. He lived his life in a way that never required him to look
over his shoulder, or to second guess a decision he made.
Exposure to people like Al Andolsen in this profession definitely
makes me think of the expression "Dwarfs standing on the shoulders
of Giants"- this phrase has its origins attributed to Bernard of
Chartres who was quoted to say "We are like dwarfs on the shoulders
of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater
distance, not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any
physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised by
their giant size."
You will be truly missed, my friend.
