Subject: [RECORDS-MANAGEMENT-UK] Museum Information Policy and Records
Management toolkits available now

*Museum Information Policy and Records Management toolkits available now*

January 2010

The London Museums Hub has launched an *Information Policy Toolkit* (
www.collectionslink.org.uk/IPToolkit) and a *Records Management Toolkit* (
www.collectionslink.org.uk/RMToolkit); both are now freely available on the
Collections Link website. The toolkits were developed by the London Museums
Hub* Information and Records Management Project* and are designed to raise
museum staff awareness and increase capacity for information and records
management across the London region museums and beyond.

The *Information Policy Toolkit* introduces the benefits of managing museum
information at a strategic level and gives practical advice on how to
develop an information policy that fits your museum. Using real life
examples, the toolkit explains how to conduct an information audit, how to
interpret the audit data and how to create an organisational ‘information
map’ which can then be used to inform your information policy.

The *Records Management Toolkit* comprises two modules. The *Tools and
Guidance Module* outlines the common components of a records management
programme and offers sample policies and procedures that can be used to
develop tailored documents to fit your museum. The *Training
Module*includes a training plan, a workshop presentation and notes
that you can
manipulate to fit your own training needs. Together the modules allow you to
start managing the records in your museum as a corporate asset.

*Hub Information and Records Management Project*

The Hub Information and Records Management Project (May 2007 to March 2011)
is staffed by the Records Management Advisor and a Records Assistant. It
comprises implementation of a records management strategy for the Hub,
delivery of information and records management training to the Hub and
regional museums, and provision of advice to regional museums via
consultancies and the Hub’s Museum Development Officers.
