True. And if you're in a company which will have shredding at many
locations, be absolutely certain to consider the time you will spend with
their EDI or invoicing process. If you're on a periodic cycle, it's still
common for even national shredding vendors to invoice based on their
schedule rather than only billing when a barcode reader has hit the inside
of the shred bin door. That level of verification is quite easy
systematically and all of them have the abilities to do it and will put a
barcode inside the door of the shred bin. Unfortunately, too often the
barcode is only used for their own internal inventory system and not as a
verification of service before billing.

And trying to timely validate and verify shred service at multiple locations
before paying an invoice is a challenge in organizations with multiple
locations.

Tom,

All good points. You also need to consider whether the
storage/shredding vendor can support your operations in all of your
locations. My company tried the approach of having the same vendor
for both but were not totally successful. We have branches and
logistic support facilities in all 50 states (some of them isolated).
One single vendor could not support all of them. I now manage 20 plus
shredding vendors - not the best situation but we had no choice since
most if not all of our records must be shredded.
