One source of information as to retention periods is NARA at www.archives.gov  Click on Records Management on the right side in green and then look for GRS -- General Records Series.  This covers records common to Federal Government agencies and includes many of those that you might come across (http://www.archives.gov/records-mgmt/ardor/records-schedules.html) . Try GRS #14, 20, and 24.
 
Remember to consider the source and, for non-US Federal Gov't, use this information as guidelines.

I've checked many many public universities' retention schedules for some guidance.  These records do not have permanent value - but just seeking what a reasonable amount of time for retention might be as a guide.
