The question that began with a discussion regarding sales representative
turmoil appears to have morphed rather substantially. I've read quite a bit
about what the ICRM "should do" or what ARMA "should do" with interest.
I'll allow the ICRM to speak for itself, but believe that they carry out
their mission admirably, with an almost all volunteer effort, and limited
resources.

As for what ARMA should do.... There's a great deal that ARMA International
does - much of which is designed to provide for (1) establish information
governance standards and best practices, (2) to advance the profession, and
(3) to provide value to members. What we're doing in the arena of Generally
Accepted Recordkeeping Principles® (GARP®) and in delivering and promoting
the Competencies and the Self Assessment in order to meet those
organizational goals. We've seen additional education content made
available to members - including those who were unable to attend the
International Conference in Orlando, and we've seen a constant stream of
information to us coming from ARMA, all designed to support the information
needs of RIM practitioners.

As many of you may have seen in the past month, we have had three calls for
volunteers - one focused on our education content strategy and its delivery,
one focused on our higher education efforts and a third for our
GARP®steering task force. We are blessed with talented volunteers and
talented
staff. With regard to specific endeavors, we often must rely on highly
motivated volunteers.....so for those of you who see an issue that is
important to you... I'd recommend that you do as Peter Kurilecz and others
have done, jump in and become involved. If there is a "standards related
issue" of interest, speak up early.... volunteer to help.

I encourage anyone who sees a gap in what we deliver to fully participate -
to write that compelling article on NFPA standards changes and what it means
for RIM professionals, to jump in as a volunteer to work on any of the calls
for volunteers, and to fully participate at each opportunity that exists to
indicate what you as an individual see as the most critical issues that ARMA
can address.

What ARMA members can expect is that we will remain responsive to the needs
of our members - by continuing to pay close attention to the input that we
receive from those members. Certainly not every concern of every member can
be addressed - the resources to do that do not exist for us or for any
association. However, as an organization, ARMA International takes the
interests of its members and the profession seriously, seeks the input
needed to ensure that we're "on track" with member concerns, and crafts its
programs and plans to meet the concerns shared by its members - within the
limits of our resources.

Douglas P. Allen, CRM, CDIA+
President, ARMA International
