Hi George,

Not sure I have something referenceable for you off the top of my head but
here's the common theme I've seen in some pretty extensive research the last
few months.

Cloud = one or more of the following:
- Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) - applications accessed through the browser,
data stored "in the cloud". Examples include Gmail, Salesforce.com,
SpringCM, and many many others.
- Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) - the platform is made available through the
cloud, invisible to the user. Paypal is probably the best-known example of
this to lay people but there are others.
- Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) - this is raw hardware and I/O made
available through the cloud. Users here would be other companies, including
Saas and PaaS players, who purchase storage and computing cycles like we
purchase electricity and water.

Web 2.0, to the extent it is *just* technology, is mostly SaaS. It's also
significantly to do with ease of provisioning, ease of use, etc.

Social networking could be considered a subset of Web 2.0 insofar as it is
SaaS.

Social media is often used as an umbrella term for social sharing, social
networking, Office 2.0, etc.

We're starting to see some use of the term "enterprise collaboration" to
describe the use of social media inside the firewall. There was a lot of
pushback from managers about "social" stuff and how it would distract from
work - but everyone wants effective enterprise collaboration.

In brief, the biggest RM-specific issues are around determining what to
capture as a record, how to ensure its findability, and how to ensure
retention and disposition. There are other concerns, to be sure, around
security, uptime, privacy, etc. and FOIA and discovery are way behind the
curve (as is not unexpected).

I will try to put together a list of more definitive resources around
cloud/social/Web 2.0/etc. maybe this weekend.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of myself and no other company,
organization, association, entity, or board of directors,

Jesse Wilkins, CRM, CDIA+, ecmm, emmm, ermm
