Regarding the linked articles observation at http://is.gd/aPbPG :

"So this data suggests that unlocking content at AIIM means more than a
sixteen-fold increase in the number of downloads."

This does not surprise me as it takes a significant amount of time to
repeatedly type into browser form fields name, address, phone, email, etc.
with even 15-30 seconds per form adding up over time. Filling in these forms
creates an immediate sense of losing work time that everyone is sensitive
to. The biggest slowdown is that you have to watch out for the automatic
form fill-ins that try to get you to subscribe to multiple email newsletters
that can fill your inbox with completely irrelevant marketing info very
quickly. So it might take almost a minute to be careful with every form.
Default browser field fill-ins do not help much as one has to stop typing
characters, arrow down, or use the mouse, and then resume typing. The
biggest disincentive to putting your personal contact information in another
database is that you know you can trust the data to be eventually lost or
misused. Once you start trying to take advantage of the "free" white papers,
you realize that your time is not free.

It would be better for everyone if more marketing departments realized that
there is no free lunch if it takes a lot of your time to eat it.
