You are absolutely correct.  Unfortunately it seems that those who control
the purse strings rarely see it that way, and do not invest in digital asset
maintenance.

I had a bidding war several years ago over an 8 inch floppy drive I was
getting rid of.  Folks had floppies but no way to access them!

Gordy, I think the question is a misleading one. What lasts longest is
an active system of hardware/software/media/controls which regularly
monitors the current state of digital assets, and regularly migrates
those assets to newer hardware/software/media as appropriate. The
management of digital assets over the long haul should not be viewed as
a static endeavor. Its really the system of on-going maintenance that
determines longevity.
