Tamara,
We use a slightly different approach at the University of Texas Health Science at Houston. We have a category called "Course Contents" with a retention period of AC + 5. AC= After end of affected semester.
We do this because the instructor may change the class in any number of ways that affect the syllabi; course descriptions; bibliographies; readings lists; handout materials, etc; and by setting a trigger or definitive clock, the instructor can manage the class and curriculum documentation.
It's worked well for a number of years for us.
