Cheryl--
Professional pest control is your best bet. If you've got vermin inside
the records boxes, may need to take more aggressive steps. Fumigation and
gels rarely penetrate inside boxes which, by way of the hand-holes, can
become instant sanctuaries stocked with yummy paper for silverfish,
roaches, etc to feast on while the world beyond the box is hostile to
them. If live bugs are found inside the boxes, then you could end up
infesting your work environment when retrieving the boxes. If this
scenario is likely, find out where Purdue's nearest industrial freezer is
located and ask if you can store bagged & sealed records there for 48
hours (shrinkwrap also works well). Going this route will require
additional 12-24 hours of thawing before unbagging the boxes and accessing
the requested materials, but all bugs will be dead and mold (if any) will
be dormant.
Hope this helps,
