Hi Anne

Yes, as others have said, it happens all too often. There is lots of
information available, eg here in Oz I'd go to NSW State Records or the
National Archives web sites and it's not too hard to find good info on
digital preservation and recordkeeping aspects thereof.

But what you say to the directors, assuming they have the usual 3 minute
attention span and believe everything their IT people tell them, is "IT
backup is designed to recover from serious short term problems. It won't
help manage our long term legal compliance when hardware, software and
legislation change over time."

Or something like that. Keep it simple.
