Back to the future?

At my current engagement, where records are commonly required for 25 years and more, we were discussing digital-record migration strategies, especially the procedural difficulties and expense.

At some point, while trying to assess the viability of methods and the projected responsibility of our distant RIM heirs, it occurred to us that the future solution might be an old one: micrographics.

One migration might do it all, freeing us from concerns about obsolete hardware, operating systems, application software, display/print drivers, etc. We have yet to work out the projected economics of a single migration to microform compared to multiple migrations to digital media, but it seems cost-effective at first blush.

We recognize that some of the metadata would be lost, though some can be saved in the indices. But the tradeoff is that all our descendents would need for retrieval is a flashlight and a magnifying glass.

Your thoughts?
