Seeing responses to Phil's question reminded me that I used to get similar
calls when I was head of Yale's Records Services, which was the
RM/collecting arm of the University Archives. I'd forgotten about them
until I began reading everyone's responses, and then some came back to my
mind. I actually enjoyed getting those calls. While most were just a
redirection to another phone number, some blossomed into full
conversations as the alums were curious about the program. A couple, or a
few, progressed into donations of archival materials. If I remember
correctly, I accessioned records of the Polo Team, and some long lost and
obsolete fraternities/eating clubs which included jewel studded solid gold
frat pins. I also remember an alum calling me back after I had given him
contact info to get what he needed; he just called back to thank me and
pay a compliment which I will never forget, "You really have your fingers
on the pulse of information at Yale."
Now that I think about them, I miss those phone calls. I used the wrong
numbers as a way to market the value of the fledgling Records Services,
and its parent: the University Archives, and it worked.
Phil-- maybe you could have a quick "elevator" speech for such incoming
phone calls where you can concisely explain the value of your unit before
sending the caller off to another office?
