Hi Phil,

Our office does receive emails and calls from students asking about their student records and even the occasional call from a staff member asking about personnel files. We explain that our offices provide structure and oversight for all records management processes and then refer the individual to the appropriate records management partner (Registrar or Human Resources). We are also working to determine the best name for the office, especially since we serve 3 out of 4 campuses in our system.

In my organization, Records & Information Management reports to Institutional Compliance..so we are thinking of branding ourselves as Information Management Compliance or something similar.

Chris

Subject: Question re Naming RIM in Higher Education

All,

For those of you who work in higher education, what do you call your office, i.e., "Records & Information Management," "Records Management," etc.

At SCSU, we are called "Records & Information Management." However since our inception, I have been receiving more and more calls each week from students regarding their personal student records: transcripts, name/address changes, gpa/credit questions, etc. I have surmised that the word "Records" implies that I handle student records. Consequently, my supervisor and I are considering changing the name of the office.

After reading "Information Nation" by Kahn & Barclay, I have suggested "Information Management & Compliance," "Information Management Compliance," or something to that effect.

Any ideas??

Thanks very much,
Phil Koslowski
