And I'd suggest you take a close look at the chart in this story.

The data comes from a "...survey of 331 business technology
professionals..." presumably across a number of industry segments, but when
you look at their responses to how long various "...types of data..." are
retained, there is no mention of the contents of these 'types of data' and
how they are determining how long they keep them.

And there is no breakdown on the industries they represent, if any effort is
made to segregate information subject to privacy protection,
confidentiality, intellectual property, etc. For example- E-Mail is a Data
Type; so are Office and Share Point documents.

The article mentions the importance of having a retention schedule, and
having 'tools' that facilitate managing tapes to meet those, but I haven't
seen too many retention schedules with line entries for E-Mail or Office
Documents or Share Point Documents... have any of you?

Articles such as this bring to the head a serious need to seek out and
engage these 'business technology professionals' in discussions and while
doing so, explain what 'archiving' means when it comes to records... while
the article correctly points out backups aren't intended for archiving, it
seems to miss the point of how archived data SHOULD appropriately be managed
for business and regulatory needs.
