I have been giving presentations for many years, even before PowerPoint. I
believe the Hypnotized Chickens are not mesmerized by PowerPoint, but by the
lack of communication skills of the presenter. I zone out when I see a
slide that is chock full of text, lines, and arrows. If you have a lot of
information on the slides, the audience will be trying to decipher it, not
listen to the speaker. Slides are normally supposed to support the oral
presentations, not replace them. PowerPoint is a poor medium for standalone
presentations. I've seen this countless times when I have examined
presentations that were declared to be records and were pretty much
unintelligible to those who did not attend the presentation session. It is
possible to make a good standalone PowerPoint presentation, but I have
rarely seen this done successfully.
