definition:
The Senior Reference Archivist is responsible for managing the archival
reference services of the Missouri State Archives for the Records
Services Division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
The Senior Reference Archivist reports to the State Archivist.
JOB FUNCTIONS AND GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Trains and supervises reference staff including part-time
staff, interns, volunteers, and seasonal hires in reference policies and
procedures.
* Insures that all telephone, e-mail, mail, and in-person
requests from Archives' customers are handled properly and in a timely
manner.
* Schedules reference staff to insure maximum coverage and
assistance for patron services.
* Assists with development of digital initiatives and online
resources.
* Oversees the development, creation, and updating of indexes,
reference forms, informational brochures, and finding aids.
* Implements procedures regarding reference and technical
services for the records.
* Provides in-house tours, programs, and workshops in
conjunction with the Historical Educator and other staff.
* Promotes the Missouri State Archives through public outreach
and speaking engagements.
* Works with the State Archivist in establishing priorities for
the Archives by recommending objectives, policies, procedures,
standards, guidelines and schedules.
* Collaborates with archivists on appraising, selecting,
transferring, arranging, describing, and preserving records.
* Advises staff and appropriate entities in evaluation of public
records for archival retention or destruction.
* Collaborates with conservation staff on the implementation of
preservation procedures.
* Participates in the preparation and administration of budget
for the Missouri State Archives.
* Analyzes administrative and operational problems and
implements corrective action.
* Monitors work and evaluates performance of staff.
* Works with the Assistant State Archivist and State Archivist
on the purchase of supplies, equipment, books, and statewide contract
items.
* Performs all other tasks as assigned by the State Archivist.
KNOWLEDGE, Skills, AND ABILITIES:
* Considerable knowledge of sources, methods, and techniques
used in historical research.
* Broad knowledge of Missouri history and government.
* Knowledge of archival standards, principles, practices, and
techniques including the care and preservation of records.
* Ability to provide appropriate assignments and instructions to
individuals and groups of employees and to supervise the performance of
their work.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with associates, elected officials and their staffs,
private groups, and the public.
* Strong organizational skills.
* Ability to read and interpret historical information.
* Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in
writing.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* A master's degree in history, archival administration,
historical administration, or library science (with an archival
component) and three years of supervisory experience are required.
* Certified Archivist is strongly preferred.
* Progressively responsible work experience in an archives
environment.
* Must be able to lift and carry a forty-pound box and climb a
ladder to retrieve material
