I think that information published by IRS could give some answers:
For example,  IRS Publication 552, Recordkeeping for Individuals. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p552.pdf said

for the purpose of maintaining tax books and records,
all requirements that are applicable to hard copy books
and records still apply. When replacing hard copy books
and records, electronic storage systems must be ...."

I think that if you check its site, the right answer exists.
