Nick:
In addition to the standards for microfilm mentioned by Bob Breslawski in his message, I recommend the following national and international standards or guides for the longevity stability and/or storage of various media:
ANSI/NISO Z39.48-1992 (R2002) ISSN: 1041-5653,Permanence of Paper for Publications and Documents in Libraries and Archives
Care and Handling of CDs and DVDs — A Guide for Librarians and Archivists (NIST Special Publication 500-252, October 2003)
ISO 11108:1996 Information and documentation -- Archival paper -- Requirements for permanence and durability
ISO 18925
Imaging materials - Optical Disc Media – Storage Practices
ISO 18923
Imaging materials – Polyester Base Magnetic Tape – Storage Practices
ISO 18901
Processed Silver-Gelatin Type Black-and-White Film – Specifications for Stability

Subject: [RM] Useful Shelf Life of Media
I have been asked to put out "feelers" to a few associates in ARMA in
an effort to gauge... "Are there any published standards or positions
on the shelf life of various electronic media (CDs, DVDs, tape, optical
disk, etc.)?"
Considering that our organization is well aware of the perils of
obsolete technologies to read media are as great, if not a greater risk,
we are simply looking for established guidelines or standards used by
other organizations. These questions are open to practitioner and
consultant alike, public and private sector, domestic and international.
1. What is the useful shelf life of the following media adhered
to within your organization:
Media Type Useful Shelf Life
Paper Media
Paper Media
Microform Media – Microfilm, Microfiche
Disk Media – CD
Disk Media – CD-r
Disk Media – DVD
Disk Media – DVD-r
Disk Media – Floppy
Disk Media – Optical
Disk Media – Hard Drives
Magnetic Tapes – Round Reels
Magnetic Tapes – 3480 Tape Cartridges
Magnetic Tapes – Data Tapes
Magnetic Tapes – Video Tapes
Magnetic Tapes – Audio Cassettes
Photographs
2. What sources for guidelines or standards does your
organization use?
3. Are there other media guidelines used in your organization
(i.e. media not listed here)?
Of course I feel compelled to disclose that company and individual
names will remain anonymous... this is more of an exercise in obtaining
a "pulse" of what other professionals are doing in the profession. No
specific company or individual will be named in our discussions. Your
responses will remain confidential, so please feel free to respond
directly to me offline if you would like.
Please let me know if you have any questions. As always, thanks for
your time and willingness to help out.
