Annemarie,
Besides compelling arguments of
e-discovery review, maintenance/backup/restore, storage costs to convince IT or senior management to not "keep data forever," you could argue in terms of information governance in so far as all departments must be in compliance with corporate policies such as the RIM retention policy.
