Hello List serve,
I am a long time lurker, infrequent contributor to the list. I may be a little late on the voicemail/texting thread, but it is a compelling discussion that I just had to get into!

I wanted to share that there are applications available that can be downloaded to employees individual cell phones that allow them to access company e-mail on their own phone. Check out Good Mobile Messaging. I don't know if it captures texts, but it does allows employees to conduct business via their own device. It sits behind your firewall and encrypts data in transit and data stored on the device.

I think the use of personal cell phones is a trend we will continue to see. As this next generation enters the workforce - they will expect the use of the technologies they grew up with (my 16 year old niece is never apart from her blackberry!). Smart phones can accommodate the need, and as we all experience tight budgets, it will be cheaper for IT to let staff use and pay for their own device, rather than purchase devices for them.

I tend to agree with those on the list that believe that as Records Managers we cannot block advances in technology, but rather have to partner with IT in such a way as to ensure that Records needs are met when technology is selected.

These are just my thoughts, and not necessarily representative of the organization that employs me....
