Hi Mitchel.....

What you are trying to do is different for each organization....no two are
alike and someone else's structure probably would not help you. You will
need to poll your users and determine what records your organization has,
the media they are stored on, how long they are currently keeping the
records and the value of these to the organization. Once this is done,
you can work on building the records classification and retention periods.
These days the most effective classification is functional in nature. The
retention periods are based upon needs within your organization,
government regulations as well as guidelines if you are in a regulated
industry.

If you have never done this before, check with the ARMA bookstore for
material. There have recently published some new books which should be
able to help you.get started. You may want to consider bringing in a
consultant to help guide you.

Good luck with your program.
