Dear List Serve,

I have been a follower of the list for a couple of years now, and have posted once or twice in the past. In those posting, I apologize as I forgot to follow protocol and introduce myself first. So I am taking this opportunity to make up for my oversight and to post a new question to this community.

I am the Manager, Archives and Records for McGill University in Quebec, Canada. I have a few years experience in both fields (formally trained and educated as an Archivist through the University of Manitoba Archival Studies graduate programme) and have worked as a records analyst and manager in a couple of Canadian universities and for the provincial and federal government.

I am interested in hearing from you about your experiences and thoughts on greening up the processes used in confidential, offsite shredding services. I have spoken with one vendor and some of their greening initiatives include:

* the shredded paper is recycled into common day products such as paper plates and paper towels

* metal is taken to another recycling plant

* a special bio-oil is used in the equipment to reduce waste

* looking at alternative forms of energy to reduce the amount of non-renewable resources being used

* provide a environmental certificate each year stating how many trees are saved

We are also looking at university-wide sustainability of shredding documents, so any thoughts, comments on this would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in advance,
Lori Podolsky Nordland
