Rich:
I agree with Patrick that Postini is not a "records management" solution
to archiving email; however, it does offer some benefit to a small,
public entity that does not have the IT infrastructure, staff, or
funding needed for a more comprehensive solution. The City of Keene, NH
(population 22,955 in 2000) uses Postini primarily to enable it to
respond effectively and efficiently to right-to-know requests for
e-mails -- though Postini also offers some additional features. Cost is
$45/user for up to 10 years retention, which would satisfy most (if not
all) retention requirements under NH's Municipal Records Retention laws.
Perhaps a better rate than $45/user could be negotiated for a state
government which has significantly more users than a mid-size
municipality, but at some user-threshold-number other products with
additional features may become financially attractive.
