Ralph, you are indeed correct that we (in our enthusiasm) have strayed from the initial question. However, the strategy outlined - by you, and others - is the same, either for updating an existing schedule when the law changes; or for determining appropriate retention of legacy records.
 
ie We need to research the legal requirements for the period covered by the records (past, present, future) - not just the laws currently in effect at the time the schedule is prepared.
 
A good reminder for us all.
