Things did happen before the 20th century.

Sorry, the records management began before-before "efficiency movement of the 
early part of the 20th century".
By the way, "access" to "organized" information was one of the demands during 
French Revolution

Hi Mark,

The Records Management "movement" grew out of the efficiency movement of the 
early part of the 20th century.  Efficiency experts abounded, and the military 
was also included in the government interest in improving efficiency in its 
offices, and so studies were undertaken.  Out of this, in the 1920's grew an 
effort to approach the handling of records in a new, more efficient way.  The 
father of modern records management, Leahy, was a naval officer who had been 
placed in charge of this movement in Washington DC, and he was brought aboard 
the National Archives planning team as it attempted to make sense of the records 
of federal offices that were being gathered for appraisal by the team who would 
then place archival records within the National Archives.  The strategies that 
were born during this process became the backbone of modern records management 
in the U.S.

Subject: [RM] Nebraska Proclamation, History of RIM

Nebraska Governor, Dave Heineman, will be signing a proclamation on Wednesday 
honoring ARMA Nebraska for 50 years of operation.  I have been offered the 
opportunity to give a 1-minute speech regarding our proclamation.

I think I can speak for current events and direction of the industry as well as 
benefits for developing a Records Information Management program.  However, I'd 
like to splash a bit of historical information about the history of RIM.  Does 
anyone have resources or information about the history of RIM?  What were common 
records management problems in the 40's and 50's that led to formation of 
formalized records information management practices?

Again, this is a 1-minutes speech and I'm from Nebraska, so I don't speak 
incredibly fast :-)   I'm just looking for quick, interesting facts or stories.
