The release of former Gov. Sarah Palin’s emails raises difficult challenges
for the state. These challenges won’t fade away. Palin’s record as governor
will continue to be of great interest, and other officials will come under
similar scrutiny. Requests for all their emails are certain to arise, now
that it’s clear that anyone can obtain such records at minimal cost.

Under the current law, these requests could cost the state a lot of money —
too much, in fact. The Legislature and administration should explore ways to
recoup more of those costs in the future.
