Think in terms of a football field. 120 yards long and 53.3 yards wide.
100 yards plus 10 yards of end zone for each end zone. Hash marks are
parallel on either side of the lengthwide center line, at 1 yard intervals.
Jr. high school, high school, college, and pro football fields all have the
same dimensions. The hash marks are narrower together for NFL than for jr.
high, high school, and college fields. The hash marks are used for 2
things; as a visual point of reference for placement of the ball after each
down, and the ball will be placed within the parameters of the parallel hash
marks if the ball carrier or receiver is tackled or goes out of bounds
outside those parameters. Thus, most of the linemen action is within the
hash marks. Key points; visual point of reference, and placement
identification

Indexing, reference, identification of data sets, streams, and digital
signatures all use electronic hash marks. On a RIM level; records series
and retention record numbers are examples of hash marks that most of we
would use. It is a "hook" to identify and deliver data, or records.

As far as the algorithms or cryptographic bits and bytes..., need a computer
person to define those in technical and/or layman terms.

Of more immediate importance to me, tonight I will watch the Cardinals
continue to chase the NL wildcard playoff spot. While doing so, I just
might imbibe with a few amber-hued beverages made from malted cereal grain
(barley), flavored with hops, and brewed by slow fermentation. These will,
per current refrigerated stores in my abode, be housed in 12 ounce aluminum
cylinders cooled to 37 degrees F.

Best regards, Steve
