The Obama Administration today announced a “Big Data Research and
Development Initiative.” According to the press release (
http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/microsites/ostp/big_data_press_release.pdf
), "To launch the initiative, six Federal departments and agencies today
announced more than $200 million in new commitments that, together,
promise to greatly improve the tools and techniques needed to access,
organize, and glean discoveries from huge volumes of digital data."

The White House also released a fact sheet (
http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/microsites/ostp/big_data_fact_sheet.pdf
) which contains, "highlights of ongoing Federal programs that address
the challenges of, and tap the opportunities afforded by,the big data
revolution to advance agency missions and further scientific discovery
and innovation."

Page 6 of the fact sheet includes the following entry:

NATIONAL ARCHIVES & RECORDS ADMINISTRATION (NARA)
The Cyberinfrastructure for a Billion Electronic Records (CI-BER) (
http://ci-ber.blogspot.com/p/about-ci-ber.html ) is a joint agency
sponsored testbed notable for its application of a multi-agency
sponsored cyber infrastructure and the National Archives' diverse 87+
million file collection of digital records and information now active at
the Renaissance Computing Institute. This testbed will evaluate
technologies and approaches to support sustainable access to ultra-large
data collections.

The 87+ million file test collection was put together by student
interns working at the Applied Research Lab at Rocket Center. The
collection consists of files gathered from agencies of the Federal
Government and loaded into a distributed data (iRODS) repository.

The kickoff event for the Big Data Research and Development Initiative
will be webcast from 2-3:30 pm today.
