Well, as I tell my users here at EDC, images produced by the scanner in virtually all Multi-Function Copiers (MFCs) is usually crap (sorry to be so blunt, but there's no better word). The machines cited in the article are MFCs.

If you need a good quality scanned image, buy a dedicated professional scanner. It may cost more initially, but it pays off in image quality. Or go to a conversion shop which is appropriately equipped.

Most of all, remember that scanning is only part of the document conversion process, which includes document preparation, selection of appropriate metadata, selection of appropriate scanning parameters, adequate quality control of the scanned images, data entry of the metadata, and adequate QC of same.

The appropriate scanning parameters include file format AND compression type (if any--probably NOT a good idea for engineering drawings).

If you just want to shove the paper through a machine, the old dictum applies: "garbage in, garbage out".

Best regards,

Fred
