Here's one that came up just this week - COMMUNICATE with your customers. County government is like working for 20 different businesses and some go off and do things on their own. Someone from one of our departments mentioned to me three or four months ago that they had their own account with a certain very large storage vendor. Let's call them "Steel Hill". They also mentioned that their storage charges seemed to be exorbitant, so I asked to see a copy of their bill.  It turned out that they were paying Steel Hill's top rate, where I was paying a much lower negotiated rate. While we decided it would be best to maintain the separate accounts, I contacted Steel Hill and convinced them that, since we were part of the same organization, that the department should get the same rates that I do. Consequently, my customer will be saving thousands of dollars a year, just because a modicum of communication got started.
